More than 30 people braved the rain Nov. 29 to rally in front of Manhattan Criminal Court, where the notorious landlord Steve Croman was facing multiple mortgage-fraud charges. Croman, who owns more than 185 buildings in Manhattan and is the largest residential landlord in the East Village/Lower East Side, is also facing a civil lawsuit brought by state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman on behalf of tenants who have alleged he systematically intimidated and harassed them in order to get them to leave their rent-stabilized apartments. “The tenants are keeping a presence at all the court dates—and expect the full weight of the law to fall on Croman,” said Cynthia Chaffee, a leader of the Stop Croman Coalition, which organized the rally. His next court date for both the criminal and civil cases will be Feb. 7. For more information, contact Good Old Lower East Side at (212)533-2541.
