Alcántara por que no nos escucha

“Alcántara, Alcántara, ¿por que no nos escucha?”

January 2018

Several dozen protesters sang Christmas carols outside state Senator Marisol Alcántara’s Inwood office Dec. 20, at a rally urging her to make three pro-tenant bills a priority for the Independent Democratic Conference, the Republican-allied faction she joined after being elected as a Democrat in 2016. They sang “¿Alcántara, Alcantará, por que no nos escucha?” to the tune of “Oh, Christmas Tree” (Alcántara, Alcántara, why don’t you listen to us?), and a version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” in which “my landlord gave to me… constant harassment, unpaid bills, one broken boiler, and Jeff Klein and the IDC.” They then wended upstairs to the senator’s office, where they handed staffers stockings stuffed with hundreds of postcards telling her to support bills to reform the state’s preferential-rent law and repeal vacancy decontrol and the 20-percent bonus rent increase on vacant apartments.
