Join or Donate to the Metropolitan Council on Housing

Help us achieve our goal of a city where safe, decent, affordable housing is a right, not a privilege.

Which option should I choose?

The Metropolitan Council on Housing has two independent organizations.

The action organization, Met Council, Inc, fights for stronger rent laws and tenant protections. It is a 501(c)(4) non-profit, so gifts to this organization and memberships are not tax-deductible - they are used in part for efforts to push for pro-tenant political reforms. This is the hardest type of money to raise, so we strongly encourage you to give to this organization if you do not need the tax deduction.

MCREF (Met Council Research & Educational Fund, Inc.) is a tenant-education organization. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and your gifts to MCREF are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.

Why have a membership structure?

Our advocacy organization, Met Council Inc., is rare among non-profits: an organization that is run by, led by, and funded almost exclusively by our members.

We believe that tenants - those most affected by the housing policies of our city - must be the driving force behind changing the policies. We encourage everyone who believes in our motto of "housing for people, not profit" to join as a member and give as much as you can.

Membership includes a free subscription to our monthly newspaper, Tenant/Inquilino, and invitations to member events. Most of all, you'll be making all of our work possible!
